natural environment

Andy Goldsworthy, Ice Egg

be natural!

The outside world is a great source for artists - landscapes, cloudscapes, seascapes, townscapes... basically any views or elements of the world can be a starting point for art + design.

Also check out more examples from the built environment.

Rural views Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Marais Pasture

Constable was criticised at the time for painting scenes that were too close to nature!

Clouds and storms JMW Turner, Deluge

Turner was fascinated by the effects of nature and often painted scenes with turbulent, swirling clouds. His paintings are seen as almost early abstracts - he concentrates more on the eddies of light and colour than he is on the landscape itself.

Water

The constantly changing nature of waves and water have been an inspiration for artists such as van Gogh, who tried to capture the movement and energy he saw at the beach.

Using natural materials Andy Goldsworthy, Rowan Leaves with Hole

Richard Long goes for long walks all around the world, in fields, deserts and along rivers. Sometimes he makes lines and circles by walking repeatedly up and down. Other times he collects stones and other natural materials and brings tham back to galleries to make rectangular and circular shapes on the floor or on the walls.

Sunny days Charles Sheeler, Ford Plant, River Rouge, Criss-crossed Girders

Renoir and his fellow Impressionists, Monet, Caillebotte, Manet and Bazille loved to paint outdoors. They tried to capture the essence of the scenes in front of them by examining the play of light across the landscape.

Structures in nature

Chris Drury creates structures in the landscape using natural materials - cloud chambers, vortices and cairns from willow, stone and bark.
