design is 'intelligence made visible'

Gropius, Bauhaus

be innovative!

A definition of 'design' is that for an object to be designed it must have good intentions. Some modern designers have been criticised for worrying more about fashion, flamboyance and novelty instead of making designs that improve the way we live. Try and think how your designs might be an improvement upon old ones.

The Bauhaus started in 1919 as a design school in Germany. They intended to improve the world through design where form follows function. Following World War I there was a need across Europe for cheap, mass-producible buildings and products. The Bauhaus set out to design them.
