design museum

improve the way we live!

Design is all around us - our clothes, furniture, houses, cars, consoles, MP3 players, tools and so on. Some of the best designed objects you won't even think about them being designed - they work so well you don't think about them!

Try and think about the design in the world around you - check out equipment in the house or school and see if you could improve it. It might not look good, or it might work inefficiently. It might not be environmentally friendly or it might be unsafe to use. Sketch out new solutions - these can be very rough drawings with scribbled notes; anything that helps you get your ideas down quickly before you think of something else!

This site with showcase great designs from our pupils. They might be in the design stage and only exist as prototypes or development models, but the ideas will be there. Feel free to use them as starting points for your own designs - you might want to radically change them, or you could use an idea from, say, fashion, in mountain bike design?!

Don't keep ideas to yourself. Bounce them around your friends, family and teachers. They will give you feedback and new ideas.

packaging design Most of the products we buy are packaged in some way or other to make them look attractive and to protect the contents. However in today's world we should be looking at using less packaging and using sustainable materials. Your challenge as young designers is to move packaging into the 21st century. Examples.

fashion design We all wear clothes. Fashions are continually changing. Since the 1930s many fashions have been influenced by the styles of young people. You create the ideas and provide the push for things to change, so go and do it! Examples.

product design Good product design means that the product works well, in an efficent way, looks good and is desirable and is ergonomically sound. Try re-designing your bike, MP3 player, board etc. Examples.

graphic design Our world is ful of text and images. We use the Internet every day and are bombarded by text and image in newspapers, magazines, on the TV and on signs and packaging. Graphic design can be used to sell things to us and to help make things easier to read and understand. Examples.

jewellery design From the earliest days, human beings have adorned their bodies with jewellery, as decorative or ritual objects. Some jewellery is made from very precious stones and metals, but you can make beautiful jewellery from junk metal, natural objects, beads, paper, fabric and threads. Examples.

furniture design At home, at school and outside, we all use furniture every day. Some is built for comfort and some for style. Designers have to think about how chairs support the body to avoid giving people back problems. Examples.
