There will be frequent drawing and painting tests plus design assignments in S1 and S2 which will help you see where you need to practice more. The main aim is to give you the chance to focus on a piece of art for a decent amount of time - this will show you what you are capable of if you concentrate on your art. This work, as well as the work you do in all your classes helps your teachers make recommendations for Standard Grade. You will probably find out that you have skills you didn't think you had! This may be a chance for you to try out design activities, such as jewellery, product and fashion design for the first time. Your teachers will assess your interest in these areas and encourage you to take them further in class and for fun at home. Homework will allow you to explore the different aspects of art + design - get a homework sheet and deadlines here...
be creative!
In the art and design department students will build on their previous skills and develop new ones.
They will investigate and record the world around them through lessons in portraiture, figure drawing and painting and still life.
Lessons will involve using a variety of media, some for the first time. Skills with pencil, pen, chalk, pastels and paint will be developed.
The visual elements of line, tone, colour, form, shape, pattern and texture will be explored.
Students will work on design projects looking at graphics, advertising and fashion. They will develop their ability to create eye-catching and innovative designs.
Critical lessons will improve students’ abilities to observe, reflect, describe and respond to works of art and design from Impressionism to the present day.
All of these skills will be built upon as the students progress through the school and will enable them to work towards Standard Grade and Higher.
