deadlines - research & appreciation (units only)

exploratory/research phase - to be confirmed

The first part of the course will introduce you to art and design historical methodology through the study of four aspects from different periods.

Each unit will consist of reading and researching, preparing and delivering short seminars and writing an essay.

Units are likely to be chosen from:

Art and war

Women in art

The rise of the avant garde - society and art

The rise of the machine - design into the Modern world

Fantastic designs - form over function in recent design

Shock horror - scandals in art from Impressionism to the present day

dissertation phase

Once you have chosen an area to research you will be required to read selected texts, plus texts you have found yourself. From these, and from your own ideas, you will write a dissertation of 4,500 - 6,000 words. This will be delivered in smaller chapters/sections at regular intervals for editing, guidance and proof-reading. A short presentation will given by each student from each section.

This course has been withdrawn by the SQA, however you can still gain unit credits for it, by negotiation with the department and senior management.
